On 26 June 2025, Aramco Malaysia in partnership with Global Environment Centre (GEC) successfully concluded the final phase of the Mangrove Forest Ranger (MFR) Programme in Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Kapal, Kota Tinggi District, Johor, Malaysia.
Implemented from 2023 to 2025, the programme helped to foster environmental awareness and increase understanding amongst students, educators, communities and the public on the importance of mangrove conservation in Malaysia. With support from Aramco, the program was implemented by Global Environment Centre (GEC), in collaboration with local communities and relevant state government offices.
A total of 35 schools (primary and secondary school) participated in the programme, benefitting over 13,000 participants consisting of students, educators, school staff and community members. Students and teachers who participated in the programme were provided with hands-on experience of planting 2,100 mangrove trees and fun classroom activities on mangrove conservation and biodiversity. This blended approach enabled participants to develop practical environmental stewardship skills while cultivating a deeper understanding and appreciation of the vital role that mangrove ecosystems play in supporting biodiversity, coastal protection, climate resilience, and livelihoods of the surrounding communities.
Mr. Ayman M. Hoho, Managing Director of Aramco Malaysia, note, “The successful completion of this three-year programme, alongside others currently underway, reinforces our commitment to environmental stewardship, which is deeply integral to our approach.”
Mr. Faizal Parish, Director of Global Environment Centre, stated, "This programme has been a remarkable journey of empowering young minds to become environmental stewards. The enthusiasm and commitment shown by students and teachers in conserving our mangrove ecosystems give us hope for the future of environmental conservation in Malaysia."
