Aramco Malaysia plants 1,000 mangroves in Johor

Mangrove Volunteer Planting Program

The volunteers included employees of Aramco Malaysia, PRefChem and GEC, members of Tanjung Surat Island Mangrove (SHBPTS) as well as participants from local communities. With the first planting completed in February 2024, 1,000 Rhizophora Mucronata mangrove trees have now also been introduced to Tanjung Surat Island, Johor, with the aim of planting a total of 9,000 trees by the end of the year. The program emphasizes the importance of engaging stakeholders in conservation efforts to increase awareness and foster a sense of ownership among local community members.

With increasing recognition of the critical role that mangroves play in protecting coastlines, helping preserve biodiversity and acting as a natural CO2 sink, Aramco's initiative is aimed at supporting these vital ecosystems. Mangroves serve as a natural habitat for numerous species, providing refuge for many marine organisms while acting as a buffer against storms and coastal erosion. Aramco is investing in nature-based solutions while recognizing that challenges remain with respect to the survival rate of the mangrove plantings.

The active participation of volunteers demonstrates that conserving natural resources requires society-wide involvement.

Aramco Malaysia Managing Director Ayman M. Hoho said: “We believe that community involvement is key to making a positive impact, and that's why we have actively engaged with hundreds of community volunteers in our mangrove conservation efforts in Malaysia. Together, we planted over 19,000 thousand saplings in Malaysia, supporting one of nature’s most powerful ecosystems.”
